Description

1968 Hillman Minx Arrow Race Car. A lovely example of a road legal (tax and mot exempt) race prepared Hillman minx, which was a long-running British family car of the 60’s, this being an “Arrow” was the later more modern, squared-off redesign introduced in the mid-1960s by the Rootes Group. This still has the plaque on the dash and dealer badge and later rear window decal. This is a very rare car in itself with around 19 believed examples left. It has a current Motorsport passport in date until 2032. Its great fun to drive and handles brilliantly considering its modest origins. The Holbay engine pulls hard and smoothly and all the gears work, including the overdrive. A really good introduction to the world of historic saloon racing, and with a little more development could be a very quick car indeed. The car also gets loads of attention due to its rarity on the track, and people love talking to you about it. “My dad had one of these!” “Wow, this was my first company car” etc. A very cost effective way into Historic racing or a great talking point at a car show and coffee meet, but at its heart this is a period racing car its very loud, the gearbox and cut gears are particularly noisy and the welded diff makes road driving a little challenging if parking but its still great fun and part of the charm but needs to be noted its not a car you’d want to drive miles and miles in. There is a spare diff and potentially an original gearbox available also TBC. •Overview (1968 model) •Body style: 4-door saloon •Layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel drive •1725cc inline-4 •Carburetted (usually single carb in standard form) •Power: roughly 60–75 hp depending on spec •Top speed: around 85–95 mph (137–153 km/h) •Transmission - 4-speed manual gearbox with working overdrive Technical specification and modifications •1725cc Holbay engine with twin 40 Webers, •upgraded suspension, •Uprated brakes •All FIA compliant and with a valid Motorsport UK logbook until 2032. Fully prepared with the following: •1725cc Holbay full-spec engine, rebuilt 1 year ago with only 2 races since, •Twin 40DCOE Webers, tubular exhaust manifold and straight-through exhaust; •4-speed + overdrive gearbox; •Welded rear diff, •Rear axle has anti-tramp bars and panhard rod; •Lowered and updated suspension all round; •Revolution 5. 5J alloy wheels with Yokohama treaded track tyres; •Full 6-point welded cage including door bars; •Front Cobra FIA approved bucket seats (in date); •Full 4-point OMP harnesses, 1 year old and in date; •Fully plumbed in Lifeline fire system; •External battery isolator and fire point, •Aluminium foam-filled race fuel tank mounted in boot; •Updated radiator; •Oil cooler; •All catch-tanks etc. as required by Motorsport UK; •New laminated windscreen; •Additional instrumentation (rev counter, oil pressure and water temp gauges). Mechanical Structurally sound and resplendent in its original green colour and a proper 1970’s matt-black go-faster bonnet, the paint is very period and presents well but its no show car and has a scuff on rear arch easily touched in. The car also has the original dealer sticker in the rear window and a genuine 1970’s nodding dog on the rear parcel shelf. The back seat is also still there for road use. Technically sound and starts on the button and drives very well, its very noisy and the gearbox has a loud whine due to gears particularly in 3 and 4th but adds to the charm, it’s a racing car after all. Slight oil leak from speedo cable but apart from that no other know issues, gearbox works well.. water and oil pressure and stack rev counter all work. Paperwork V5 Present with 6 previous owners Some Mot history, (we are trying to obtain a large history file from the previous collector) The Motorsport Passport is valid with all specifications until 2032
